Dick Gregory headlines the South Carolina NAACP’s Annual Freedom Fund Celebration, an event that celebrates a rich legacy of civil rights work that continues to build even today. Join civil rights advocates, business, industry and church leaders, and top policy makers in the state at the Carolina Coliseum on the campus of the University of South Carolina. Mark Friday, June 27, 2008 on your calendar as an important date to honor our shared progress. The event starts at 5:00 PM. Invitations are arranged for sponsors and donors in advance. NAACP Reviewing Misuse of Force Cases

The South Carolina State Conference continues a months long investigation into reports of abuse by officers of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. At the urging of the NAACP, members of the Legislative Black Caucus were successful in elevating the debate about the conduct of certain officers in the department. Those concerns ultimately encompassed the directory of Public Safety and the head of the highway patrol, both of whom have since been relieved of their responsibilities. As new report surface we will continue our review.

Students Qualify for National ACT-SO Finals

ACT-SO, the NAACP’s premier student scholastic and cultural program that serves high school students, will hold its National Finals July 30 - August 3, 2008 at Disney World in Orlando, FL. Thirty-three students will travel to Orlando to compete with students from across the country in areas ranging from drawing and sculpture to physics and business. In all twenty-six categories are available to students involved in the ACT-SO program. The South Carolina State Conference is actively looking to expand ACT-SO in the state. The mentoring and enrichment phases of the program will begin in September. To find out if an ACT-SO program is located near you, contact the State NAACP at (803) 754-4584.

National Pan-Hellenic Council Cancels Meeting in SC

One less conference will be held in Charleston, SC as a result of the NAACP boycott on the tourism industry in South Carolina. The National Pan-Hellenic Council will relocate a fall conference to Charlotte, NC. 

NAACP Launches Probe Into Proposed Mega Dump

Marlboro County Branch NAACP and the State Conference have initiated a review of a planned 900 acre mega dump proposed to be built in Marlboro County under the environmental justice initiative. Public comment on the matter is welcome as well as additional statements form landowners and residents living near the proposed site. 

Supreme Court to Hear School Appeal June 25th

The South Carolina Supreme Court is preparing to hear arguments in the decade-plus old lawsuit Abbeville v. State of South Carolina on Wednesday, June 25 at 2:30 PM. Only one hour has been allotted for presentations by counsel - thirty minutes for each side. We will continue to take a keen interest in this education equity case.
